Miami Dolphins acquire Benny Sapp via trade

The Miami Dolphins acquired veteran CB, Benny Sapp in a trade that involved WR, Greg Camarillo earlier this week. Sapp is entering his 7th season in the NFL after playing 4 seasons in Kansas City and 2 seasons in Minnesota.

My Take

I could not be happier with this deal. For some reason I was never a huge fan of Greg Camarillo and for some reason I have always been a huge fan of Benny Sapp. There is nothing extremely flashy about Sapp, however the Dolphins had the worst group of corners last season in terms of statistics, so every little bit helps. Nolan Carroll was not exactly what I expected. I had a good feeling he was going to come in and be a great nickel and dime coverage specialist, however he hasn’t looked good at all this pre season in pass coverage. Sapp could be a great veteran addition to play the dime spot.

This trade leaves a couple of more questions.

1. Now that Camarillo is gone, who are going to be the 5 WRs that make the final roster? Obviously Marshall, Hartline, and Bess are locks. I assume that Patrick Turner is as close to a lock as possible now. So that leaves one more spot. Roberto Wallace? That would be my bet, even though he looks to be an exact replica of Turner. Wallace has looked good on Special Teams this pre season as well. You also have Marlon Moore competing for the spot. If it is down to those two, I would have to go with Wallace with the success he has had in Training Camp and Pre Season. Either way, I love both of those guys and wouldn’t mind either one.

2. Now that Miami has brought in Benny Sapp, what happens to the CB situation? Does this mean Jason Allen has no shot at making the final 53 man roster? This would put him down at the 6th CB spot, which leads me to believe that he won’t be in a Dolphins uniform next season. I am still mind boggled at why the front office tried to move him back to CB, because in 2007, Allen was extremely solid while playing safety. There is no way he makes this team as a safety either this year, with the depth Miami has there.

Should be interesting to see how these last few days play out before the final roster cuts.
